Recover From Identity Theft on Your Tax Returns

Repairing your identity after it is stolen is difficult and can take years to recover. A common form of identity theft is stealing a social security number to file taxes in a different name. This prevents you from getting a refund or can harm your data with your tax return. If you want to change the outcome of a stolen identity, you can use an IRS IP PIN.

This is designed to protect you from fraudulent reports on tax returns and stops others from stealing a social security number. A new tool to protect your identity with an IP PIN is now available for additional security.

The IP PIN is designed to prevent others from using your social security number and filing your tax return. It provides a double security method so others can’t use your information for a refund. It then alerts the IRS to examine the current entry for added protection. You can receive an IP PIN from a letter from the IRS giving you an opt-in or with a CP01A Notice. The PINs are also readily available to all residents living in Florida, Georgia and the District of Columbia.

The IP PIN is available for different tax returns. However, the PIN isn’t available for a state tax return. It is also available for specific return methods, such as the 1040 series. Once you use this double security measure, it is mandatory to continue to use the PIN. Filing without the return will reject the paperwork and alert the IRS that there may have been an attempt of fraud with your return. You will then be required to secure your identity before receiving your refund.

Keep secure with extra protection on your tax returns. To prevent someone from retrieving your information, you can use an IRS IP PIN. The approach now available is designed to stop identity theft with your social security number and tax returns. The IRS PINS allow you to place your records and your tax return into safe keeping.
